Frequently Asked Questions

What if I need a cesarean? Will you still be able to photograph my birth?

I have photographed quite a few cesarean births and the extent of what I can capture depends on the circumstances. Whether a photographer is permitted to photograph in the OR depends on hospital staff, especially the anesthesiologist. In the case of a planned cesarean birth or a labor where the circumstances lead to a cesarean birth, it is often possible to arrange for me to take photos in the OR. In the case of an emergency cesarean or one that takes place due to labor complications, it will depend on the staff. If I’m not able to enter the OR, I would be photographing everything I can prior to the cesarean and typically be allowed to come to recovery and take photos of you and baby during those early hours after the birth.

You can see some lovely cesarean birth photos in my birth portfolio.

What if I’m in early labor for a long time? Will any of that be photographed? Or what if I’m being induced and my labor may take place over a couple days?

My goal is to capture your whole story. In the case of early labor at home where you’re waiting for things to get active before going to the hospital, I am happy to come to your home (assuming you live in the area) to photograph some of your activities, emotions and preparation. (And maybe get a few final images of your big belly.) If you’re being induced, I can come to the hospital to photograph you and your partner as you’re preparing for that phase, then go home and come back when labor starts to become active.

We have a family heirloom (blanket, outfit, hat) we’d like to incorporate into our newborn session? Is this possible?

I’m happy to try to incorporate some special items you would like to use in a few photos. I typically photograph your newborn in just a diaper or swaddled (sometimes a naked photo on their tummy :)) so the focus is on the baby and all their newborn baby parts and the baby in the arms of the family.
